Durga Puja in Chittaranjan Park started in early 1970s,with land allotees slowly starting to build their homes and shifting here from other parts of Delhi. With more people coming in and the penchant for a group of Bengalees to get together and start their own Durga Puja festivities, led to the single Durga Puja to break into 3 and then subsequently into 4 Sarbajanin Durga Pujas in the colony. These Pujas gained name, fame and stature across Delhi and beginning of late 1990s saw a huge increase in inflow of crowd visiting Chittaranjan Park to watch these big Pujas. The locals from C R Park began feeling alienated in these big Pujas and found themselves lost there. This gave rise to smaller Durga Pujas – like Chittaranjan Park Purbachal Durga Puja – which started in the year 2000.

This Puja crossed its Silver Jubilee year in 2025 with a relatively grand scale of celebrations and this year it is the 27th year of our Durga Puja. Keeping in mind the reason to start a smaller Durga Puja, we have deliberately striven to maintain a ‘homely’ or ‘ghorowa Pujo’ atmosphere in our Puja. Our Puja is open to everyone from within C R Park and also outside. 

We pay special attention to take care of the senior citizens – the original allottees of land in C R Park, whose 2nd or 3rd generation is now active in our Puja. We encourage an environment of a large family celebrating Durga Puja taking along all its members. So, all visitors to our Puja would find a warm and hospitable environment where they are received with a warm smile and a welcoming hand of our volunteers and members of the Puja Committee.

This is vastly different from the impersonal ambience that one usually experiences in large Durga Pujas. We ensure that the Bengali culture is strongly manifested in all our activities. The Durga Puja itself is carried out in an utterly traditional manner with each ritual followed in a most fervent manner. 

Our entertainment too is to ensure that our Dadus, Didas, Thakurdas, Thakumas, Jethu, Jethimas and Kaku and Kakimas are treated to cultural programmes, which cater to their likes.
