Unit 7A – Where Gardens Grow and So Do We
— A Personal Tribute from a 10-Year Member of AIKGA ( All India Kitchen Garden Association)

I was introduced to AIKGA Unit 7A quite by chance, when I went to interview Ms. Kanta Madan, an enthusiastic gardener, for a colony magazine 11 years back. Her terrace garden was a riot of colours, fragrances, and edible greens — but even more inspiring was her warmth and passion. It wasn’t long before I found myself attending a Unit 7A meeting, and from that moment on, I was hooked. Kanta ji was the reason I joined AIKGA 7A, and over the past ten years, it's become one of the most enriching parts of my life.
Founded in 1980 by the visionary Sarla Bhargava ji, the All India Kitchen Garden Association (AIKGA) began as a quiet revolution — encouraging urban dwellers to reconnect with the soil, grow their own food, and build sustainable, self-reliant lifestyles.
From its leafy base in Gulmohar Park, AIKGA has blossomed into a city-wide network of garden lovers, with local units like ours nurturing the community spirit.
Unit 7A, based in South Delhi, is more than a garden circle — it’s a family of green thumbs and warm hearts. Our gatherings are a celebration of everything earthy — from swapping seeds and garden gadgets to sharing homegrown harvests and home-brewed compost recipes.
The Knowledge Box at our meetings is a living library: filled with handwritten tips, vintage articles, pest control remedies, and plant lore passed from one member to another like treasured family recipes.
Our meets are informal yet deeply enriching — terrace meets under the winter sun, plant sales that double up as laughter sessions, and visits to each other’s gardens that turn into mini celebrations. Whether it’s exchanging baby saplings, gifting neem oil spray, or reviving a struggling curry leaf plant — there’s always someone ready to help.
In Unit 7A, I found more than just advice on soil mix or pruning — I found a space to grow, to give, to learn, and to belong. It’s not just a group — it’s a garden of friendships, rooted in shared values and blooming with joy.
