Residents of our colony
make it a point to leave home for work with ample time in hand. Not an
unusual practice for a Delhite, but one has to be extra careful as it takes 20-30
minutes to just get out of our colony to the main road . The same is the case
while returning home as one may be stuck on the road in the colony itself for
about half an hour. With the pavement in front of the houses and the market
areas blocked by cars, one has to maneuver the way out of a maze of irregularly
parked vehicles.
Chittaranjan Park is not alone in its suffering. The
congestion and resultant space constraint are difficult to miss on most of the
adjoining colonies. Pavements and roads are choked with cars. But what many may
not know is that most these cars do not belong to the residents. They belong to
second-hand car dealers who encroach upon public land with impunity. Each
dealer parks 10 to 15 cars on public land on an average. Also, car repair shops
without proper garage space eat up a substantial part of the public road
leading to narrower driving spaces. Taxi stands are equally responsible for encroaching public
land and parking spaces .
Another culprit, is the running of commercial activities from
residential areas where the customers park their vehicles in front of others houses,
gates, and turning points. Leaving a car
on turnabouts, pose a high-risk of accident as the moving cars cannot possibly
see if any other vehicle is approaching or not.
These encroachers of public land need to be removed by the concerned
authorities to resolve the congestion on the roads and residents should be able
to drive comfortably in and out of the colony.
